Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology Is Offered At Horizon Optometric Group

At Horizon Optometric Group in Westminster, we recognize that LASIK and contact lenses may not be right for everyone. For that reason, we offer orthokeratology as a great solution to correcting many vision problems.

What Is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology, also referred to as Ortho-k, is when an eye doctor prescribes special contact lenses to wear only at night to help correct common refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Ortho-k help reshape the cornea so that you can see during the day without the need of wearing corrective eyewear. Throughout the treatment phase, you may need to continue to wear contacts or prescriptive lenses until your vision gradually changes. After a week or two, you will not need any vision correction lenses during the day, but you will still need to wear your ortho-k contact lenses at night.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Orthokeratology?

Ortho-k primarily treats myopia, also known as nearsightedness. It is a condition where people cannot see objects clearly at a distance. Orthokeratology is can treat low and mild myopia. Although results vary with each person, the best results are seen when candidates are under 40-years-old.

Other good candidates are children as young as 8-years-old to 12-years-old who are suffering from progressive myopia. Because the ortho-k lenses reshape the corneas, the progression of myopia can be slowed or stopped for children that age. Orthokeratology is not recommend for people with high nearsightedness, large pupil size, or dry eye syndrome.

Adults who live active lifestyles or struggle with contacts or glasses are also excellent candidates for ortho-k. Schedule an appointment with Horizon Optometric Group for a proper evaluation to see how orthokeratology may help your vision.

After Initial Treatment

Ortho-K is not a surgical treatment, and do not make a permanent change in vision. Most patients will need to continue wearing their orthokeratology lenses every night, or at least every other night, so that they won’t need corrective lenses throughout the day.
